How I Became a Spray Foam Expert

Last week I talked about lobsters in, You Should Grow Like a Lobster, remember?

This week I want to talk about how I became a spray foam expert.

You may have read about how I started in the industry in the first place, but in case you haven’t, when I graduated college, I accidentally got a job with Demilec USA, a leading spray foam insulation manufacturer.

I was not the obvious choice to become an engineer for them.

Sure, I had been on a construction site before, I worked on my step-dad’s framing crew when I was a teenager, but I knew nothing about insulation, much less spray foam insulation.

During my interview, I was asked, “Why would a chemical company hire a mechanical engineer?”, and to tell you the truth, I had no idea… I put on my best inquisitive face and said, “That’s a great question, I was hoping you could tell me?”

Despite my cluelessness, I was offered a position as an engineering intern and started my journey.

Now, think about where you are at, whether you are new to the industry with a few months of experience, have a few years under your belt or you are the go to person for your company, right now you are further along than I was when I started.

Really, I was fresh out of college, no construction experience, no insulation experience, no professional work experience and I started at the bottom, as an intern.

It took time for me to become an expert, it didn’t happen overnight, it was a process.

And, if you want to learn and get better, it will be a process for you too, so determine what you want to achieve, take your time and focus.

Now, you may not want to become a spray foam expert, you may just want to learn a little more to make your job easier, or you may just want to become proficient in one specific topic, or like me, along the way, you may decide that you want to know everything.

Regardless of where you are at right now or what level you want to get to, the steps are the same.

Here is the simple three step process that I used to become a spray foam expert:

Knowledge – I was bombarded with questions and needed to gain the knowledge.

Action – I took action to find the answers.

Repetition – I engaged in this activity continuously, over and over again, fielding questions and providing answers.

Now, I said it was simple, I didn’t say it was easy. Each of the steps is simple, you can do them, it only takes time, discipline and perseverance, but I will be the first to tell you, there is nothing easy about becoming an expert.

I will also say that you are probably already an expert, you just don’t realize it yet.

You only have to be one step in front of another person to be a leader and an experienced expert to them.

Think about it, a fourth grader is experienced at third grade to a new third grader and a second-year professional athlete is a veteran to the new rookie, likewise by reading my articles, being involved in the spray industry and trying to improve your knowledge, you are the spray foam expert to Holly Homeowner, Bobby the Builder and Anna the Architect.

Over the next few weeks I will breakdown each step of the process that I used to become a spray foam expert, because if I did it, then you can do it too.
