Pay Attention

Last week we discussed the second key to success, Positive Attitude, and over the next few weeks we will take a deeper look at the remaining keys to success and see how they might help you go to the next level.

Today we are going to talk about the third key to success, Pay Attention.

Do you remember your parents and teachers always telling you to pay attention? If you listen to them this can be a very powerful lesson, because paying attention fuels the power of observation, and I bet if you take a look at the successful people in your life, they know how to pay attention and be observant. Whether delivering a business presentation, making a sales call or handling a customer service call, being in the moment and aware of body language, tone of voice and other non-verbal cues can be the difference between a win and a loss.

Furthermore, going beyond the power of observation, the ability to pay attention is the foundation of learning and growing. One of the key types of knowledge used by everyone is modeling knowledge, or the ability to watch others, learn from them and then apply those skills over and over until you are successful. If a successful person has experience doing something and you can learn from their experiences, see what they did right and what to avoid, wouldn’t that be an advantage? That’s what modeling is all about, seeing what others have done before you and borrowing their methods and techniques to gain success.

The most fundamental example of this is how a baby learns to walk. We don’t lecture, or do power point presentations, we don’t describe the physics or explain how the foot and the knee joint work; we simply model the activity by walking in front of the baby as part of our normal day. The baby sees this motion repeated by many people and tries to copy what everyone else is doing. He will fall down in the process, but is not discouraged, he gets right back up and tries again and again until he is successful.

Remember, babies pay attention, so can you. And you can apply this to learning anything, including spray techniques, sales techniques, troubleshooting, and more.

Over the next few weeks, we will continue to take a deeper look at the Five Keys to Success and how they might help you go to the next level and achieve some astounding, audacious, ridiculous goal.
