How I Changed, Part II

Last week I started the story of How I Changed, so this week I will pick it up where I left off.

…All that I needed to do was burn more calories than I eat. So, how many calories do I eat?

I realized that I did not know how many calories were in food. I was completely ignorant to how many calories I ate in a day. So I implemented a system; to have success with almost anything you should look for good systems to support you. Technically most diets are pre-designed systems but very hard to live within those systems for the rest of your life, there-in lies the problem. A winning system needs to be simple, easy to do, repeatable and manageable as a life-style change. My system was simply to track the number of calories that I consumed against the calories that I burned; there’s an app for that (I used and highly recommend MyFitnessPal.) And I needed to run at a deficit, burn 300 to 500 calories more than I ate each day, to lose weight. No food was off limits, vegetables & lean protein are less calories, sweets & sugary drinks cost more calories and are not filling and I could earn more calories with physical activity.

Great, now I knew how much I was taking in, and for the first month I got a free guest membership at a local gym and I did the typical thing and went to the gym three days a week. I knew the days that I went to the gym that I had more flexibility in my food choices, I essentially earned calories that I could spend on food. But I hated the gym, it was not fun, after a long day of work I did not want to be there and I definitely did not want to pay a monthly fee for something that I did not enjoy. I knew I needed something different, I needed to find some physical activity that I WANTED TO DO, that regardless of what happened at work or how tired I was, I would be excited. So I turned to an old hobby: disc golf, and picked up a new one: jiu-jitsu.

Both of these options gave me something that I didn’t get at the gym, excitement and discipline. I was so excited that I couldn’t wait until I could go have fun. I found myself planning my day so that I could fit in one of these physical activities.

Tune in next week to see my results and get an outline of the process for How I Changed!!!
