The last few weeks I shared some thoughts about the SPFA Certification Program – SPFA Certification, What Do You Do with It? and SPFA Certification Levels, Where Do I Fit In?, check those out if you have not already seen them.
On to the SPFA Convention. This time every year the industry gathers to share the latest and greatest developments and ideas to help educate contractors and improve the industry; right now we are in no-so-sunny Orlando, Florida – it’s about 45°F and 20ish mph winds, I know, not really winter, but eehhh, Florida is supposed to be sunny.
Wednesday morning in the opening session we heard from Kurt Riesenberg (SPFA Executive Director), Denny Vandewater (SPFA President), Allison Bailes of EnergyVanguard (Building Science Consultant) and Richard Rawlings from Gas Monkey Garage.
And the messages that I take with me include:
- Brain science tells us that once we hear something believed to be “fact”, as humans, our brains do not want to let that information go, even when there is evidence and proof to the contrary
- Cash flow and life-cycle analysis may be better metrics than payback period to determine value of an upgrade like spray foam
- Most business problems are generally related to customers, vendors or employees
- Gas Monkey Garage is not in the car business, they are a lifestyle brand with the tagline “Blood, Sweat and Beers”
- The key to success is to build the right team and then violently execute
These ideas and the opportunity to walk the trade show floor, reconnect with old contacts and make new contacts, is very powerful.
If you are not here, you are missing out. This is an opportunity for a meeting of the minds, to hear where the industry is headed and see how you can improve your company.
If you are in Orlando, reading this Thursday morning, make sure to join me at 10:15 AM when I present 3 Ways to Close More Sales with Building Science in Salon 5.
