A significant part of attending the SPFA Convention each year is the opportunity to learn from others in the industry. This is facilitated, in part, by the sheer number of sessions offered each and every year. The biggest challenge is choosing which one session to attend at any given time.
Here were the options during the third breakout session:
- Building and Energy Codes: A Status Update by Mike Fischer
- Federal Agencies Update EPA & OSHA by Matt Humpreville, Margaret Sheppard
- 3 Ways to Close More Sales with Building Science by Robert Naini
- Knowing & Counteracting Negative Media with Your Customers by Julie Fornaro
- How to Grow Your Retrofit Business by Marc Tannenbaum
- Understanding new Acceptance Criteria of Thermal and Ignition Barriers over SPF by Gary Wolfe
- Blower Doors – The Greatest Asset You Never Owned by Ken Allison
- SPF Insulation: Shrinkage Issues and Termination Details by Roger Morrison
- SPF Equipment Panel: Part I by Graco, Spray Foam Equipment, MCC Euipment
Here were the options during the fourth breakout session:
- Ventilation, Moisture and Other BS for SPF Contractors by Allison Bailes
- Indoor Air Quality Assessments/Spray Polyurethane Foam Insulation/Nuisance Odor Investigations by John Lapotaire
- SPFA PCP Certification & You by Bonnie Strickler
- SPF & Photovoltaic Panels by Luke Nolan
- Attic Hybrids That Work by Mac Sheldon
- Demystifying OSHA’s Confined Space Standard – Practical Solutions by Joseph Bolduc
- The 5 Applications Where Low-Pressure Foam is Best by Jonathan Fore
- Spray Foam Installations with Reduced Occupational Exposure by Dan Nelson
- SPF Equipment Panel: Part 2 by Polyurethane Machinery Corp., CJ Spray, Revolution Machinery
If you want to see more about these sessions, keep an eye out on the SPFA website as they usually publish the slide presentations a few weeks after the convention.
I presented in the third session – 3 Ways to Close More Sales with Building Science and will send that video out in a private link to my blog subscribers on Friday, tell your friends to subscribe here.
In the fourth session, I chose to attend Ventilation, Moisture and Other BS for SPF Contractors presented by Allison Bailes. Here is the session description from the SPFA guide:
Using SPF in a building enclosure can have a big effect on the dynamics of heat, air and moisture flow. That makes understanding the fundamental principles of building science critical for a successful outcome. In this video, Allison discusses these principles, with an emphasis on moisture & ventilation and he takes a look at some specific issues that come up in homes with spray foam insulation:
Can you use open-cell SPF in thick, double-stud walls?
How do you prevent moisture problems in insulated attics?
What’s the best way to ventilate a house with SPF insulation?

Allison was gracious enough to allow me to record and share his presentation, here it is:
