Spray foam is Awesome!
Have I told you that?
Yesterday I inspected the spray foam insulation in an unvented, closed attic assembly here in Texas. It was open cell foam, sprayed directly to the underside of the roof deck, complete with intumescent coating and a vented storage area above the garage that was separated from the unvented attic with a partition wall made from spraying foam against fabric.
The Texas sun was burning hot and bright yesterday – our high temperatures were around 100°F. And when I stepped into the vented storage area above the garage, it felt like a typical attic space, you know, hot and muggy. A few minutes in that area and I was pouring sweat.
Then I opened the small separation door between this storage area and the attic, and I was greeted by the familiar comfort of conditioned air. The unvented, closed, semi-conditioned attic (whatever you want to call it, these are all correct) was between 75°F and 80°F, not surprising, for those of us in the know, right.
All of the mechanical system, including the ductwork, was in this space, which means lower heat gain on the ductwork and no duct losses to the outside, both big bonuses for the performance of the system.
But the most interesting thing about the whole event, was the guy that came into the attic after me. You see, he was not in the know… until now. By experiencing it first hand, he got it, it made sense to him and now he wants spray foam for his own house. He said that his first reaction was to call his wife and tell her, “You are not going to believe this…”
Did you catch that?
Even though he was standing there and the benefit was self-evident, he knew that another person not in the know, like his wife, was not going to believe it.
So, the simple concept is – If you can help more people experience spray foam, you will get more customers. Are you doing tours of conditioned attics?
You can do this in retrofit friendly neighborhoods, where you have a satisfied customer, give them a bonus to use their attic and show it off to their neighbors, or in the builder’s show home – the builder’s sales team can put on the dog & pony show and the 75°F attic should be part of the tour.
Stay tuned next week as we continue to discuss the interesting world of spray foam insulation.
