The Difference Between Average and Amazing

Last week I warned you not to let your temper get the best of you, in Don’t Lose Your Cool.

This week I want to talk about The Difference Between Average and Amazing.

When measuring accomplishment, most people will perform at or around an average level, and by comparison, a small percentage of people will perform at an extremely high level and get amazing results.

Have you ever thought about what separates the merely mediocre from the truly magnificent?

Why are Bill Gates, Warren Buffet and Oprah so much more successful than other people?

Are they smarter? Do they work more hours? Do they work harder?

Maybe, but I think the difference between average and amazing results is much more simple, it’s consistency.

Consistency in action.

Think about anything that you have done that was worthwhile. I guarantee that you took consistent action to achieve your success.

Anthony Robbins said it this way:

“It’s not what we do once in a while that shapes our lives. It’s what we do consistently.”

 consistency-is-key

We are taught consistency at a young age with sports, dance and school, but it is difficult and we rebel against it.

Our education journey through elementary, junior high and high school is a perfect example of the compound effect of consistent action at work.

When you started kindergarten, did you ever think that one day you would do algebra, calculus, read Shakespeare or balance a check book? No, neither did I. We just took one day at a time, did what we were asked to do by our teachers and parents and along the way we learned and developed our own personalities. We took consistent action!

Whether your goals are personal development, getting better at your job or running a business, it’s a lot like kindergarten, you should take it one day at a time, with the primary focus being to learn, and in the process of taking consistent action you will get better, graduate and move to the next level.

Consistent action builds skill and makes up for lack of talent.

Consistent action trains your mind and makes up for raw intelligence.

Consistent action builds belief and overcomes fear.

The best football teams are consistent. The best golfers are consistent. The best salesmen are consistent. And the best businesses are consistent.

Being consistent means taking small incremental steps every day to achieve a greater, compounded result in the future. This daily repetition allows you to get feedback from these actions and adjust along the way to achieve your goal.

Consistency is not about getting quick results, rather it’s about making incremental progress and improvements over time.

This is how we develop skills – singing, dancing, playing a musical instrument, speaking a foreign language, spraying foam, selling foam, running a business, etc.

With any new skill, there is a price, the time for it to develop. In the beginning, there will be little success, it may appear as if nothing is happening, and you are learning nothing, but consistent action wins every time.

The difference between average and amazing people is those that achieve amazing results commit to a consistent course of action, over a long period of time.
